Netflix is desperately looking for a strategy to keep subscribers interested in the platform. The streaming service is currently considering offering live channels. The new move is said to have recently been discussed among executives within the company, in the hope that it will attract users to spend more time on the platform.
Spend more time on Netflix
Instead of endlessly scrolling through the content, live channels ensure that viewers can immediately switch to a channel that only broadcasts comedies, thrillers or documentaries, for example. Netflix wants to increase viewing convenience and user involvement. The company is also looking at the possibility of offering subscriptions to other streaming services via Netflix. The streamer hopes to grow into a central place for all entertainment and to better compete with platforms such as Prime Video and AppleTV.
Something new is desperately needed
Netflix sees that sequels to popular titles are attracting fewer and fewer viewers. This is how the second season lost to One Piece (2023– ) approximately 30% of its audience according to American media. Meanwhile, it hit Beef (2023– ) even lost more than 70% of its viewers. The plans for live channels fit into a broader strategy with which Netflix continues to expand its offering. The streaming service has increasingly experimented with live broadcasts in recent years, including sporting events, special events and most recently the global live broadcast of Artemis II, where millions of viewers were able to follow the crew’s historic lunar passage.
