More than 25 years after the original release Practical Magic (1998) a striking comeback. The fantasy film starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman has been on Netflix since yesterday and is doing well among subscribers. The growth in popularity is most likely no coincidence, because the long-awaited sequel will finally be released next year Practical Magic 2 (2026) in theaters.
Cult classic
Practical Magic revolves around sisters Sally and Gillian Owens who are descended from a family of witches. However, their family is subject to an age-old curse: any man an Owens woman falls in love with is doomed to die. When Gillian ends up in a dangerous relationship and Sally threatens to lose her own happiness, the sisters are forced to join forces. Upon its release, critics’ opinions on the film were very divided. Over the years, however, the film became a cult classic.
A special house
The film also has special stories behind the scenes. For example, the iconic Owens family home was built on a hill in Washington state especially for the filming. However, it was only a set without a real foundation and was demolished immediately after the shooting. Even Barbra Streisand wanted to buy the house at the time, but that turned out to be impossible.
