The heat wave which has hit France again since July 4 is expected to continue at least until Tuesday, Météo France said on Thursday July 9.

“The heatwave is expected to persist until at least Tuesday July 14, before a possible gradual drop in temperatures from the west which remains to be clarified with the forecasts for the coming days,” explains the national forecaster in a publication published on his website.

In total, 72 departments are now placed on orange heatwave vigilance, five more than on Wednesday. And the north-eastern fringe of the country will be overtaken by the extreme heat, warns Météo France. This is the third heatwave episode in less than two months.

“Up to 40-41°C near the coasts of Languedoc-Roussillon”

While records were broken on Wednesday, with more than 40°C in Marseille, the night that followed was not always synonymous with respite. It “was exceptionally hot in the Rhône valley and near the Mediterranean”, notes Météo France on its site, pointing to “unprecedented values, all months combined”, notably 30°C in Cap Béar (Pyrénées-Orientales) or 27°C in Nîmes.

In the afternoon, temperatures will be “often between 35 and 39°C, up to 40-41°C near the coasts of Languedoc-Roussillon”, and “between 32 and 36°C” maximum temperatures in the north and east, according to forecasts.

“The heatwave is expected to persist until at least Tuesday July 14,” estimates Météo France. In this heat, the Association of Emergency Physicians of France (Amuf) called for “the immediate cancellation or postponement of demanding sports competitions planned outdoors” throughout France, in order to preserve the healthcare system.
