Netflix has released the trailer for Elize: Shadows of a Womana Brazilian film based on the infamous case of Elize Matsunaga, the woman who brutally murdered her husband.
The Matsunaga case
In 2012, Elize Matsunaga murdered her husband in their apartment in São Paulo. The case received enormous media attention in Brazil at the time. For that reason, Netflix also released a documentary series about the case in 2021: Elize Matsunaga: Once Upon a Crime (2021).
Elize: Shadows of a Woman
A former escort discovers that her wealthy husband is cheating. The betrayal eats away at her and poisons their marriage.
From documentary to fiction
While the previous Netflix documentary reconstructed the facts surrounding the case, this film opts for a fictional approach to the events. The thriller is directed by Felipe Vellas and written by Raphael Montes and Mariana Torres.
More than a true crime story
Montes tells Netflix that the film should make people think about violence:
We wanted to open up a conversation about violence. What led Elize to commit such a brutal act?

Torres added that many people can relate to the story, but Elize’s story has the worst possible outcome.
