
Facing the 10,000 faithful gathered on the sports field which adjoins the port of Lampedusa, a few hundred meters from the pier where a few dozen migrants disembark every day, Leo XIV launched a profound appeal for love and compassion. During his homily, the pope used the metaphor of the island, a meeting place around the ports which can become a place of “dialogue” or, on the contrary, of closure and indifference. “The Gospel resonates where people meet, where people welcome each other, where their destinies intertwine (…), declared Leo XIV. On the other hand, it is silent where everyone makes an island of themselves, where contact is avoided, where exchange is interrupted. »
