Beyond the traditional hyperboles of the tenant of the White House, he transformed the event planned in Washington into a political gathering, estimates Marie-Christine Bonzom, political scientist, journalist and specialist in the United States.
“What will change this year is that as usual, Donald Trump will bring to its peak a trend that has already existed in American politics for a long time: politicizing everything,” explained the person who was a correspondent for the BBC in an interview with LCN on Friday.
“Trump will take these festivities tomorrow to their height of politicization,” she added.
The latter recalls that Joe Biden had done the same in 2023 and especially in 2024. A few months before the presidential elections, he had criticized his Republican opponent during his speech on July 4, in addition to praising his own record.
Despite expected very hot temperatures in Washington on Saturday, Donald Trump has announced a speech and fireworks that will both be the longest in the history of American Independence Day celebrations.
“It’s been a crescendo since June 14, his birthday which also falls on National Flag Day in the United States. So we see that there is this mixture of patriotism and politicization which is now exacerbated under Donald Trump,” summarizes the political scientist.
