Biblical commentaries
The apostle Thomas whom we celebrate today is very sympathetic to us because he is our twin. We recognize ourselves in him. Like him, we would like to have proof of the resurrection of Jesus, we would like to touch his body to believe. But faith is of a completely different order. Thomas experiences it.
He wasn’t there when Jesus first appeared to his disciples and he doesn’t see why he would take their word for it! He remains marked by the death of his friend on the cross, convinced that the marks of this death cannot be erased. He wants to see with his own eyes what others have seen. Curiously, Jesus accedes to his request by coming to find the disciples a second time while Thomas is present. What thoughtfulness! Jesus invites him to touch by putting his finger into his wounds. Curiously, Thomas does not move but immediately speaks: “My Lord and my God”. The sight and voice of Jesus were enough to turn him around.
Are we aware that faith comes to us from God? It is a gift imprinted in the depths of our heart which demands our adhesion. Today let us be grateful for this totally free gift and let us carry in our prayers all the catechumens and neophytes who marvel at what is happening in us and which is totally beyond them.
