A young Quebec hiker had to be rescued by helicopter after being injured during a fall in a ravine on Saturday at Mount Washington, in the state of New Hampshire, in the United States.
“He is very lucky to have survived his fall,” wrote the New Hampshire Department of Fish and Wildlife in a Facebook post summarizing the operation.
The 24-year-old hiker from Sainte-Foy, who was with three friends, fell approximately 15 meters (50 feet) into a ravine on the Huntington Ravine trail, it is written in the publication.
The incident occurred on a steep rock slab at the top of the ravine around noon.
A US National Guard helicopter was called in to assist in the rescue operation due to “the nature of the terrain and the injuries sustained.”
An initial terrain rescue team used the Mount Washington motorway to travel to a starting point from which they hiked down the ravine.
The helicopter arrived around 2:55 p.m. and the young man was able to be lifted aboard the aircraft and transported to a local hospital to treat his injuries around 3:35 p.m.
However, the hiker’s life is not in danger.

The trail the Quebecer was on is known to be difficult and is not for all types of hikers, according to the ministry.
“The upper section is a dangerous cliff climb and should not be categorized as a hiking trail,” the Ministry of Fish and Wildlife said in its publication.
