A golden old one is back with a vengeance. The Oscar-winning film Moulin Rouge! (2001) has been back on Netflix this week and that is causing a wave of enthusiasm. On social media, viewers are again praising the romantic musical and, according to some, it even remains ‘the best film of all time’.
A beloved musical
There are few musicals as beloved as Moulin Rouge!. Director Baz Luhrmann’s film became a modern classic thanks to the perfect mix of romance, spectacular sets, pop music and of course the chemistry between Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. The production was nominated for eight Oscars, including best picture and best actress. Finally went Moulin Rouge! walking away with the gold statuettes for best set design and best costume design. The original song Come What May became a hit, but remarkably was not considered for an Oscar, as it was originally written for Romeo + Juliet (1996). Come What May therefore did not meet the requirement that a nominated song must have been composed especially for the film in question.
Star cast
In addition to the visual spectacle that we have come to expect from Luhrmann, Moulin Rouge! also impressed with the great star cast. In addition to Kidman and McGregor, there are also roles for Jim Broadbent, Richard Roxburgh, John Leguizamo, David Wenham and even singer Kylie Minogue makes an appearance. The film was showered with praise upon its release.
