The Paris judicial court ordered TotalEnergies on Thursday June 25 to integrate indirect greenhouse gas emissions into its vigilance plan within six months, partially agreeing with the plaintiffs, NGOs and the City of Paris.
In this highly anticipated civil judgment relating to the duty of vigilance introduced in 2017 into French law, the 34th chamber of the court considered that the current vigilance plan of the oil and gas giant was “incomplete” because it does not include polluting discharges generated by the use of its products by customers, known as “scope 3” emissions.
The Paris judicial court also decided not to impose “precise measures” regarding the activity of the oil and gas giant, as requested by NGOs and the City of Paris. The plaintiffs demanded from TotalEnergies the cessation of new hydrocarbon projects, a reduction in oil production by 37% in 2030 and 25% for gas.
