
The remains of the Le Froid factory still stand at the foot of Montravel hill, one of the popular districts of Nouméa. This industrial site was burned on May 13, 2024, on the first day of riots which left 14 dead and billions in damage in New Caledonia. Two years after this outbreak of violence, Caledonians are called to vote on Sunday June 28 for provincial elections postponed three times after a crisis which deeply marked people’s minds. “It remains a trauma,” underlines Marie-Madeleine Lequatre, candidate for “Faire pays”, one of the 23 lists in the running.
