Plenty of work opportunities for Curry Barker, the director who scored big at the box office with his horror film Obsession (2025). For a planned successor in the same genre, Barker is joining forces with two major parties.
Quick entry
Obsession cost less than a million dollars to make, but the worldwide box office count is now approaching 300 million. The horror hit is also well viewed in the Netherlands and the reviews are mainly positive. The story revolves around a young romantic who must pay the price for his heart’s desires in a dark way.
Despite the modest budget and the fact that Curry Barker was in favor Obsession had only gone viral with previous work on YouTube, the horror film was picked up by Blumhouse Productions (from horror maker Jason Blum) and distributed by the leading US Focus Features (part of Universal, which releases the film in the Netherlands).
Potency
Blumhouse and Universal Pictures both see Barker’s potential, as the two big players are on board for his third film. It is not yet clear what exactly this will be about, but it is known that it will be another horror title and that it is based on an original idea by the director. According to Barker, he will be working on a story that he has ‘wanted to bring to the screen for some time’.
Time for something else first
Before Barker’s new horror film is released, we first expect another newcomer of his making, the horror comedy Anything But Ghosts (2027). You can read more about this film in our previous article about those project plans.
