Netflix is working on a new drama series based on the much-discussed podcast The Retrievals from Serial Productions & The New York Times. The series is produced by Margot Robbie (Barbie (2023), Wuthering Heights (2026)) and is under the creative direction of Molly Smith Metzler, known for the successful Netflix series Maid (2021). Although few official details have been released for now, production is expected to start in September 2026.
Yale Fertility Center
The series is based on true events and revolves around a scandal that took place at the Yale Fertility Center. Patients undergoing egg puncture usually expect some discomfort, but not extreme pain. When several women experience unbearable pain during their treatment, their complaints are initially dismissed or minimized. Only later does a shocking truth come to light: a nurse had stolen fentanyl from medication vials and replaced it with saline solution. What follows is a moving story in which the victims connect their experiences and try to understand what exactly happened. At the same time, the series takes a critical look at the way in which women’s pain complaints are sometimes underestimated or ignored within healthcare.
More than a crime story
The Retrievals is not limited to reconstructing the facts. The series also explores broader themes such as trust in the medical world, institutional biases and the consequences of a system that doesn’t always take patients seriously. Through personal testimonies and investigative journalism it becomes clear how a local incident grew into a national discussion about patient care, responsibility and justice.
Lila Neugebauer takes over the direction
The series will be directed by Lila Neugebauer, who previously made an impression with the film Causeway (2022), starring Jennifer Lawrence.
