Actor and director Ben Stiller (Zoolander (2001)) is working on a documentary about the New York Knicks in collaboration with production house A24 and HBO. He announced the news himself during an appearance on the podcast Roommates via social media.
Full cooperation from NBA and Madison Square Garden
Stiller’s announcement of the series while sitting alongside Finals MVP Jalen Brunson and teammate Josh Hart on the podcast was seen by many as a clear signal that access to players, footage and inside stories will not be a problem. According to Stiller, he also has the full cooperation of the NBA and Madison Square Garden.
From the ’90s to a long-awaited title
The multi-part series looks back at the iconic Knicks teams of the ’90s, as well as the long quest for success that ultimately culminated in an unlikely and record-breaking run that brought New York another NBA championship.
“I couldn’t be more excited to make this documentary with A24 and HBO about the NY Knicks!” he wrote on X.
Filming started just before the play-offs
Stiller said work on the documentary didn’t begin until shortly before the start of the playoffs. Production is therefore still at a relatively early stage. According to the filmmaker, the documentary will likely be further developed and recorded in the coming year, so a release date has not yet been announced.
