Barack and Michelle Obama will help make it happen Journeya musical fantasy series that will appear on Disney+. For Higher Ground, the production company of the former president and First Lady, it is the first project after the couple announced that they would operate separately from the previous deal with Netflix.
That’s the deal
In April, the Obamas announced that they wanted to take a more independent approach to producing films and television series. For years, Netflix had the first right to implement ideas from Higher Ground in concrete terms, through a so-called ‘first look’ deal. The best-known title that resulted from this is the thriller Leave the World Behind (2023).

Energy field
For their next project, the Obamas will collaborate with Disney’s children’s and family division. The animated series in question is called Journeyand is about a city whose residents are in danger when the protective energy field around the city (we think of Under the Dome or WandaVision) no longer functions. The story’s young heroine, the title character, springs into action when a mysterious call takes her outside of town. She discovers the truth about her father’s disappearance and turns out to possess powerful magic with which she can help her people.

Take courage
A president of Disney describes Journey as an “epic hero story” in which the protagonist’s bravery can inspire viewers. Music reportedly plays a key role. The creator will be Matt Munn, who previously worked on Ice Age 5: Collision Course (2016). He is joined by Higher Ground producer Jessie Dicovitsky. A release date for the series will be announced later.
