Edge of Tomorrow (2014) may not have been a box office hit at the time of its release, but the production is now considered one of the most underrated science fiction films of recent years. There have been occasional rumors of a sequel for over 10 years. In 2023, lead actress Emily Blunt even confirmed that the screenplay was ready. The latest update is that none other than Charlize Theron is in the picture for an important role.
A new boost
Edge of Tomorrow has been receiving great reviews and scores for more than a decade. All in all, that sounds like it’s plenty of time for a sequel and while the intentions are there, the action so far has been disappointing. This has everything to do with the busy schedules of those involved. However, now that Tom Cruise has signed a partnership deal with Warner Bros., there is hope that the project will move quickly. The rumors surrounding Theron give sci-fi fans extra hope.
Too old?
According to Blunt, the cause of the delay is not only due to the busy schedules of those involved. The actress also suggests that the original script may now be less well suited to the current situations of the protagonists.
Doug and I talk about it all the time. I know Tom would like to make the film. Hopefully it happens someday. However, timing plays a major role. Moreover, it has now been more than ten years since we made the first film. There was a great script ready, but I think it would only have worked if we had shot the sequel eight years ago. I’m not saying we’re very old, but you have to take into account that ten years have passed.
