A difficult journey
In Champagne we see Maarten’s story. He is told that his father Hans is terminally ill. To make one more special memory together, father and son decide to travel together to the French champagne region. What should be an emotional farewell trip soon turns out to go less smoothly than expected. Even before they are properly on their way, the two discover that they may not be the best traveling companions.
Inspired by true events
Into the leading roles Champagne are for Huub Stapel, Leo Alkemade, Jennifer Hoffman, Beppie Melissen, Bianca Krijgsman and Guus Meeuwis. What makes the film extra special is that the story stems from Alkemade’s personal experience. He wrote the screenplay together with Rik van den Bos as a tribute to his father. Alkemade had made plans to travel to the Champagne region with his seriously ill father. Unfortunately, that trip never happened because his father became too weak to come along. After his death, Alkemade made the journey alone.
