Who is the Antichrist in Scripture?
The Antichrist refers to several different figures in the Scriptures, according to Régis Burnet, professor of New Testament at the Catholic University of Louvain, specialist in the Book of Revelation. The term anti-Christ is only present in the epistles of Saint John (1 Jn 2, 18.22; 4, 2.3 and 2 Jn 7). It is a neologism which means “one who opposes Christ”. Used in the plural, it designates those who have left the community and want to attract other faithful to their dissidence. This term is often compared to other texts, evoking rivals of the messiah and who resemble him, notably in the announcement by Jesus of the coming of false messiahs before the end of time (Mt 24, 23-28).
