
Nothing is going well between kyiv and Warsaw. The council of the Order of the White Eagle met on June 8 to consider Polish President Karol Nawrocki’s proposal to strip Volodymyr Zelensky of the country’s highest honor. The Ukrainian president received this decoration on April 5, 2023 from the former head of state Andrzej Duda. At the origin of this bloodshed: kyiv’s decision, on May 27, to name a military unit after the “Heroes of the UPA”, a nationalist group accused of mass massacres during the Second World War. This aroused the anger of the ultraconservative Karol Nawrocki and part of the Polish right. Faced with this unprecedented situation, the Polish head of state, who presides over the Order, finally chose to wait a bit in order to “see if President Zelensky will change his decision”.
