It could be that Nicolas Cage has single-handedly lost his chance for an (even) bigger career. In conversation with the New York Times the Spider-Noir star says he didn’t hear back from famous directors after turning down roles in their films. One of those roles was an early thriller by Christopher Nolan, who later rose to great heights.

Love or hate

Cage has not had any roles to complain about in his remarkable film career. From collaborations with David Lynch and Martin Scorsese to more recent horror adventures, the quirky star has always found ways to win back some skeptical viewers (and repel others).

Over the years, Cage certainly doesn’t appear to have embraced every project that came his way. And that didn’t leave him behind, because many directors who called him once did not do so again:

What often happens is that you step on their toes and then they don’t call back. This has happened to me a million times. It happened to Christopher Nolan, to Woody Allen, and to Paul Thomas Anderson

Where the sun always shines

The actor does not specify in the interview which ‘PTA’ and Allen titles he turned down, but the Nolan thriller he could have starred in is Insomnia (2002). In it, a detective and his sidekick are sent to a small Alaskan town to investigate the murder of a teenage girl. Al Pacino and Martin Donovan played the main roles.

Exciting new work

One director who did call Cage back was David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook (2012)), and with success: it will be published later this year Madden (2026), about a former NFL coach who rewrites his legacy. Before that happens, we will first see the actor in the highly anticipated superhero series Spider-Black. It will appear tomorrow (Wednesday) on Prime Video.
