The crime thriller Tuner (2025) unexpectedly turns out to be one of the biggest film surprises of this summer. While the film was released relatively quietly beforehand, critics are now responding remarkably enthusiastically to the stylish neo-noir story with Leo Woodall and Oscar winner Dustin Hoffman. Tuner can be seen in cinemas in the Netherlands from next week.
From piano tuner to criminal
Tuner revolves around Niki White, a quiet and extremely precise piano tuner from New York who used to be a musical prodigy. A mysterious medical condition forced him to give up his dream as a pianist. When he discovers that his exceptional hearing also helps him open safes, he becomes involved with a group of criminals who commit robberies. Meanwhile, he tries to deal with the health problems of his mentor, Harry Horowitz played by Dustin Hoffman, and with his feelings for the ambitious pianist Ruthie.
One of Hoffman’s best performances
Not only is the plot well received by critics, but also the acting. There is already talk of a real breakthrough role for Leo Woodall. Hoffman, who has been in the business for decades and is known as one of the world’s best actors, also receives high praise. Tuner would be one of Hoffman’s best performances. In addition, the film receives a lot of applause for the sound and editing, which fit perfectly with the story about a piano tuner with extremely sensitive hearing.
