The president of the United States, Joe Biden, today congratulated Claudia Sheinbaum after she took office as the first female president of Mexico, and expressed his desire to work with the neighboring country for the future “democratic, prosperous and secure” for the people of the two nations.
In a statement, Biden shared that he and the first lady, Jill Biden, who was present at the inauguration of the Mexican president, want extend their “sincere congratulations” to Sheinbaum, successor and ally of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
“Jill and I wish President Sheinbaum a happy celebration and a very successful presidency, and we congratulate the people of Mexico on the historic inauguration of their first female president.”he assured.
“Mexico and the United States are strong partners and close neighbors, and we share deep political, economic, and cultural ties. The United States is committed to continuing to work with Mexico to achieve the democratic, prosperous, and secure future that the people of our two countries deserve,” the president added in his statement.

Today, Tuesday, October 1, Sheinbaum assumed her position as the first female president of Mexico for the six-year term from 2024 to 2030 in a ceremony in the Chamber of Deputies attended by almost twenty international leaders and hundreds of representatives from countries and multilateral organizations.
During his inauguration speech, Sheinbaum defended Mexico’s recent judicial reform, which establishes the election of judges by popular vote and that has been criticized by the United States, and denied that it is “authoritarian.”
