As of October 18, the Government subsidy in the payment of the electricity bill from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) will end. This measure was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation in 2024 and here we explain how it will affect the economy of Mexican families.
The subsidy on the electricity bill is support provided by the Federal Government to help users reduce the cost of electrical service. This year, the subsidy became official in five states: Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sonora, Sinaloa and Nayarit, and was applied from April to October, the period in which the highest temperatures are recorded. With the new adjustments, the subsidy will be eliminated on October 19.

Increase in CFE rates without subsidy
Once the summer subsidy ends, users will begin to notice an increase in their electricity bills. This change will be especially notable for families in regions that relied on this support to control their electricity expenses.
This discount cannot be maintained, which will impact households in:
- Baja California
- Campeche
- Chiapas
- Chihuahua
- Coahuila
- Colima
- Guerrero
- Hidalgo
- Michoacan
- Morelos
- Nayarit
- Nuevo Leon
- Oaxaca
- San Luis Potosi
- Sinaloa
- Sonora
- Tabasco
- Tamaulipas
- Veracruz
- Yucatan
Electricity costs without subsidy
Without the subsidy, rates will be regulated according to the costs established by the CFE. According to the current tariff for 2024, the cost per consumption in the 1F tariff is as follows:
- Basic consumption: 1,051 pesos for each of the first 75 kilowatt-hours.
- Intermediate consumption: 1,275 pesos for each of the next 125 kilowatt-hours.
- Excess consumption: 3,737 pesos for each kilowatt-hour additional to the previous ones.
Therefore, if a discount of 200 pesos was applied during the summer, as of October 19 the cost of the electricity bill will increase by that same amount, since, without the subsidy, the user must assume the entire amount for its consumption.
