The makers of the Prime Video game adaptation God of War have to look for a new protagonist. Deadline reports that Ryan Hurst suffered a serious injury on set and has been out of action for too long to keep his role.
Father and son
At the beginning of this year it was announced that the actor appeared in the Netflix series The Abandons (2025) would now take on the role of the mythical divine figure Kratos. The series’ story is inspired by the two most recent games God of Warand tells how Kratos and his son Atreus go on a journey together to cope with the loss of their wife/mother.

Biceps
Hurst put a lot of training into his role as Kratos, which requires him to look believable for a man who (thanks to his father Zeus, ed.) possesses godlike qualities. The actor arrived in great shape in February in Vancouver, Canada, where the recordings started, and would be busy until October. At the end of June, disaster struck: Hurst tore his biceps and had to undergo surgery. The operation has now been successful and the actor is working on his recovery.
Not until 2027 time
Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM, the two studios working together on the project, reportedly had lengthy discussions before deciding it was necessary to recast the lead role. Hurst is estimated to need four to six months to recover from his injury. Filming has been on hold since the end of June. It is not yet known who will replace the leading actor.
Watch on Prime Video • Former Spartan warrior Kratos becomes the ruthless God of War himself after taking revenge on Ares, who murdered his loved ones under the deity’s influence, but he continues to search for an opportunity to change his fate.
God of War is managed by showrunner Ronald D. Moore. In addition to Hurst, child actor Callum Vinson (Atreus), Mandy Patinkin, Ed Skrein and Teresa Palmer star in the video game adaptation.
