Although the Netflix hit Stranger Things (2016–2025) ended at the beginning of this year, the makers are far from finished with the story. During a recent interview, Matt and Ross Duffer suggested that fans may have to wait another 20 years for answers about the real ending to the series. The fate of audience favorite Eleven in particular remains a subject of discussion for the time being.
The mysterious sound
The statements came during the podcast Happy Sad Confusedin which the Duffer Brothers looked back on the much-discussed series finale. While many viewers were satisfied with the open ending, others continued to search for hidden clues about Eleven. This is how a popular theory emerged online about a sound effect that can be heard just before the collapse of a bridge, after which the story jumps forward eighteen months. Some believed that it was a heartbeat and that this was a hint that Eleven was still alive. Matt confirmed that the sound was indeed described as a heartbeat in the script, although it turned out to be a distorted sound effect. As far as he is concerned, it is up to the viewers to give their own interpretation.

In 20 years
When asked whether the Duffer brothers would still explain Eleven’s final fate, the two responded with a wink. Matt joked that in 20 years he would be willing to provide all the answers if there is still interest. Although the comment was clearly not meant entirely seriously, this statement immediately got fans speculating.
