
Who sets fire to French forests? The question is back in the news as the possibility of arson is now favored in the investigation into the Fontainebleau forest fire, which began on Sunday July 12. Since the start of the year, more than 25,000 hectares have burned in France, almost three times more than during the same period in 2025. However, in nine out of ten cases, fire outbreaks are of human origin, with lightning constituting the only natural cause.
