Warner Bros. has released the official trailer for Digger (2026), the new film from Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu starring Tom Cruise.
Cruise as an oil baron
In Digger Cruise is barely recognizable. The actor plays Digger Rockwell, an oil baron with a paunch and thinning gray hair. Rockwell is the most powerful man in the world and his company has caused an ecological disaster that could culminate in a global nuclear war. The sitting American president, played by John Goodman, orders Rockwell to solve the case, although the president falls asleep at crucial moments.

Digger Rockwell is an influential world figure who does everything he can to convince everyone that he is the savior of humanity.
Ten year old idea
Before Iñárritu, the one with both Birdman (2014) as The Revenant (2015) won Oscars, this project has a long history. The director got the idea for the character shortly after making it The Revenant. Ultimately, it took ten years before the film was actually realized. He wrote the screenplay together with his Birdman-colleague’s Nicolás Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris in Sabina Berman.
Cast filled with stars
Cruise and Goodman aren’t the only ones in the cast with star status. Sandra Hüller (Project Hail Mary (2026)), Jesse Plemons (Bugonia (2025)), Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler (2014)), Emma D’Arcy (House of the Dragon (2022– )), Sophie Wilde (Babygirl (2024)) and Michael Stuhlbarg (Call Me by Your Name (2017)) join the cast.
Release date
Digger is from 1 October to be seen in the cinema.
