Remains more than twenty years after release Mulholland Dr. (2001) continues to impress. The American film website Collider Earlier this week, director David Lynch declared the film the most universally beloved thriller of all time.
Originally a television series
In Mulholland Dr. we follow the ambitious actress Betty Elms who has just arrived in Hollywood. She meets a woman with amnesia and together they try to discover her identity. Gradually an increasingly surreal and strange mystery unfolds. Remarkably, the film was not originally intended as a cinema film at all. Lynch developed the project as a television series for ABCbut the channel rejected the pilot. With help from the French studio StudioCanal the film could still be made with leading roles for Naomi Watts, Laura Herring and Justin Theroux, among others.

No answers from Lynch
Mulholland Dr. was awarded the prize for Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival and also earned Lynch an Oscar nomination. In the years that followed, the film became a cult classic and was praised by, among others, the BBC, The New York Times and now too Collider included in the list of the best films of the 21st century. A big part of the success of Mulholland Dr. it lies in the fact that the film never gives all the answers. For years, Lynch refused to explain what exactly is happening, which means that every viewer has their own explanation.
