Dakota and Elle Fanning will soon be seen together on the big screen for the first time. The sisters play the leading roles The Nightingale (2027), the latest feature film from Sony Pictures based on the worldwide bestseller by Kristin Hannah. The film is set during the Second World War and tells the moving story of two sisters who each choose their own dangerous path in the fight for freedom, love and survival in German-occupied France.
An unprecedentedly popular book
Expectations surrounding the new cinema film are high. The book The Nightingale was released in 2015 and quickly became a big hit. In no time, more than 11 million copies were sold in 45 languages. After release, the book spent more than 165 weeks on the New York Times bestseller lists. The book is still extremely popular today. Last year, more than 1 million copies were sold.
A strategic move
The Nightingale was initially scheduled for release in February 2027. However, there has been a change in the schedule that has pushed the film back to March 2027. The reason for this is said to be that Sony wants to take full advantage of the spring break and Easter weekend that falls a week later. Moreover, according to the current schedule, the film will hardly have any competition within the genre. Only Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (2027) will also be released in theaters that weekend. The Nightingale is directed by Michael Morris, known for To Leslie (2022) in Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy (2025).
