Fan of the work of the Coen Brothers? Then you have to be on television on Wednesday for Burn After Reading (2008) with Brad Pitt, Frances McDormand and George Clooney. In the crime comedy, two gym employees find a CD-ROM containing alleged CIA secrets. They decide to blackmail everything, but that turns out to be a profession in itself. The absurd problems soon pile up. Burn After Reading is July 8 at 8:30 PM on SBS9.
Hirayama lives a contented life as a toilet man in Tokyo. Outside of his strict daily routine, he finds pure happiness in the little things: analogue music, books and photographing the trees in the city. Burn After Reading (2008)
When a disk containing completely irrelevant CIA secrets falls into the hands of two determined, but not particularly bright, gym employees, the duo tries to capitalize on their find.
On Friday you watch Sam Mendes’ Road to Perdition (2002). Mafia henchman Michael Sullivan faithfully follows his foster father and gang leader John Rooney. But when Michael’s young son accidentally witnesses a bloody mafia settlement, the family turns against them. An assassin is sent to the family, after which Michael must do everything he can to protect his son. Road to Perdition can be seen on July 10 at 10:25 PM on VRT Canvas.
Relive the day over and over again? That’s possible on Saturday Groundhog Day (1993)! Phil (Bill Murray) is an arrogant TV weatherman stuck in a bizarre time loop: he wakes up every morning on the exact same terrible day. Although he soon notices that he can shape the day to his own will, his selfish choices lead to the most absurd and comical situations. Groundhog Day can be seen on SBS9 on July 11 at 5:50 PM.
We end the week with the best-rated film of all time: The Shawshank Redemption (1994). Although he maintains his innocence, Andy Dufresne receives two life sentences for the murder of his wife and her lover. In the infamous Shawshank Prison, he befriends fellow inmate Red and refuses to give up hope. Driven by hope and a poster of Rita Hayworth, he tries to survive.
