It took a good two years, but the second season will soon be released X-Men ’97 (2024– ). The animated superhero series takes the X-Men back to the 1990s, as we see in the newly revealed trailer.
Time travel
With Apocalypse as a supervillain, our heroes must bridge past and future in the new season to prevent disaster. “I have to hit them where they are at their weakest – in the 1990s,” the evil mutant says in the new footage:
So time is clearly a relative concept in the new episodes – just like in season 1 – and that also fits with a big twist in the fate of the clawed Wolverine, who turns up alive and well after Magneto completely got him in the first season.
Adaptation of ‘Apocalypse’ comic
The plot of season 2 seems to at least partly follow the comic ‘The Age of Apocalypse’ (1995), but the creator (Beau DeMayo, ed.) who admitted to specifically working on story elements of that comic was fired during the writing process for the second season. Matthew Chauncey, one of the screenwriters of What If…? (2021–2024), then oversaw a number of rewrite sessions, which will hopefully still pay off for fans.
