Kylian Mbappé scored his 58th goal for the French team during the 3-1 victory against Senegal and broke the selection record held until now by Olivier Giroud, which he had equaled a few minutes earlier, Tuesday in East Rutherford, near New York, for the Blues’ entry into the 2026 World Cup.
With a long shot from more than 20 meters in added time, the captain of the Blues sealed the French victory 3-1, which took a long time to take shape, while he opened the scoring in the 67th minute on a service from Michael Olise.
Mbappé, now the top scorer in the history of the France team, is ahead of Olivier Giroud and his 57 goals and two ex-internationals, Thierry Henry (51 goals) and Antoine Griezmann (44). Giroud, who retired internationally after Euro-2024, but who extended his contract with Lille for another year, had established the previous best mark in 137 caps spread over 12 years under the jersey of the France team.
Already 256 goals at PSG
It took 38 fewer for Mbappé to beat a record that was promised to him, he who had his first selection on March 25, 2017. He scored his first goal five months later, on August 31, during the victory (4-0) against the Netherlands in qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.
The 2018 world champion, announced star of the American World Cup, is not his first record since he is also the top scorer in the history of PSG (256 goals) which he left with a bang in the summer of 2024.
He could enter the annals of his sport even further during the World Cup, a competition which has already forged his legend. Crowned at just 19 years old in 2018 in Russia and finalist in 2022 in Qatar, he has now scored 13 goals in the final phase and is only three points behind the record holder for the event, the German Miroslav Klose.
