• Ulysses ⭐⭐⭐ Very good

by Milky Mason | French Film | 1 h 37

The film shows two parents confronted with the disability of their newborn, whom they name Ulysses. At each stage of the boy’s life, the mother, played by Élodie Bouchez, subtle and warm, will come up against a system that is not kind to so-called “different” children, but without altering her determination to find his place in the world.

Our opinion: Director Lætitia Masson signs a largely autobiographical film where she talks about her fight with her disabled son. At the very end of the film, she connects the images of her fiction and those of reality, in a gentle and moving transition between the life of Ulysses and that of Alphonse.

• Shana ⭐⭐⭐ Very good film

by Lila Pinell | French film, 1 h 20, dramatic comedy

In Shana, her first solo feature film, Lila Pinell portrays a young adult who goes from trouble to trouble trying to find her place. Between her violent partner, her loving but clumsy mother and her money worries, she has a lot of problems. But there is no question of giving up.

Our opinion: The film has the false air of a documentary, a genre in which the director began her career. Skillfully mixing tale, comedy, social drama and thriller, Lila Pinell presents an invigorating story.

• Toy Story 5 ⭐⭐ Bon film

by Andrew Stanton and McKenna Jean Harris | American animated film, 1h42

A fifth opus of the famous saga in which Jessie, Buzz and the rest of the gang look for a real friend for Bonnie, 8 years old, sidelined by her screen-addicted comrades. To help her make friends, her parents end up giving her a tablet in turn. But her doll Jessie is convinced that virtual connections will never replace real relationships.

Our opinion: Fun and in tune with the times, Toy Story 5 nevertheless suffers from some redundancies and a welcome but not always very subtle statement which initially suggests that all technology is bad in itself. Nevertheless, the movements given to the toys have lost none of their expressiveness, and retain all their charm.

• The Yakushima Illusion ⭐⭐ Good film

by Naomi Kawase | Japanese film, 2:02 a.m. | Drama

A doctor, Corry left his Parisian hospital to work in Kobe, Japan. She takes care of children with serious cardiac pathologies while waiting for a heart transplant. But donors are extremely rare in Japan, particularly in the pediatric sector. Yakushima is the island where Corry met Jin. Their love is sincere but one day he disappears without a word of explanation, leaving Corry distraught.

Our opinion: Naomi Kawase interweaves two subjects without fluidity, with chronological detours of little use. Depending on the sensitivity of the spectators, The Illusion of Yakushima will appear poetic or nebulous. Long sensual passages focus on light, the beauty of nature, lush vegetation. The director combines this lyrical dimension with the surgical precision of images of a heart transplant. And it is by documenting with clarity and sensitivity the refusal of transplantation by Japanese society, linked to its conception of death, that the film is most convincing.
