The United States, Canada and Mexico are currently the setting for the 23rd Football World Cup, but many sports fans in New York in particular were busy with something completely different last weekend. The basketball players of the New York Knicks were able to write history there by becoming champions for the first time in more than 50 years. Afterwards, the star (‘mvp’) of the decisive match was asked about his further goals, and he gave a striking answer.
Trump’s agenda
To give an impression of how big the so-called NBA finals (the battle for the championship in American top basketball) are in the US, we only have to look at the agenda of American President Donald Trump. On Friday night (Dutch time), Trump was not at the first World Cup match of the American team, while earlier that week he had made an appearance at the third final match of the New York Knicks.
Next goal
This weekend the time had come for the team from Trump’s hometown: a fourth win (in five games) against the San Antonio Spurs ensured that the Knicks could celebrate their first title in 53 years. The most important player in the match was Jalen Brunson, who contributed to the team being able to go for the win after an earlier deficit. When asked about his further goals and plans after the final, Brunson conjured up a striking answer:
My goal now is to get in SVU to come
Star player of the NBA finals
Fan from the very beginning
Met SVU Brunson talks about Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999– ), a long-running crime series in which an elite New York police unit investigates sexually explicit crimes. Brunson would not be the first athlete to appear in a film or television series, but in this case the connections go further: Mariska Hargitay, the star of the series for many years, is a big fan of the Knicks. During the finals she was personally present to cheer on her team, once even wearing custom-made shirts; together with superstar Taylor Swift, who says she has supported the Knicks since she was thirteen.

Career switch
Could Brunson actually have a television career? If it is up to Hargitay, undoubtedly yes, and so we should not be surprised if we suddenly see an NBA star in the New York crime scene.
