Founded in 1875, the Catholic University of Lyon (UCLy) is anchored in the movement of social Catholicism. What remains of this heritage, 150 years later?
Father Grégory Woimbée: It is not really a heritage, but an ethos, a way of being, updated throughout our history: responding to the current needs of society in the light of the Gospel. In 2026, in the spirit of Magnifica humanitas (1), as in the line of Laudato si’, in 2015. Today, this doctrine is experienced both as a subject of research within the Jean Rodhain chair, attached to the faculty of theology, and as a concern which infuses all sectors. What has changed is that it has become a challenge in a society of individualism, consumerism, and contradictory injunctions. Talking about donations, for example, in a world where everything can be bought, is disruptive.
