
A whistle sounds, its shrill noise bouncing off the concrete facades. In this popular district of the historic center of Mexico City, the esplanade at the foot of the gray buildings serves as a soccer field for local young people. From Monday to Friday, Diego Gonzalez, 25, awaits them for a two-hour training session. “In Mexico, football is a national passion,” he says with pride. When I learned that we were going to host the World Cup, I felt great emotion. I was not born in 1970 for Pelé’s third title, nor even in 1986 to see Maradona’s goal.
