“This is already the highest-grossing horror film of the year,” we recently wrote. We were talking about Obsession (2025), a mix between romantic thriller and extreme horror and one of the titles currently showing in Dutch cinemas. In the US, box office experts are now amazed: the film is conquering not only the review platforms, but also the cinema box office.
Mysterious object
In Obsession we meet Bear (Michael Johnston), a socially awkward boy who has had feelings for his childhood friend Nikki for years. When he discovers a mysterious object that can make wishes come true, he decides to make her fall in love with him. It turns out that the effect of the object should not be underestimated…
Direct hit
The consensus of American critics after its release was clear: Obsession is disturbing, but also entertaining, a hit in its genre. The film has been at a good 95 percent on review platform Rotten Tomatoes for over a week now and the IMDb score is also above 8. Here on FilmVandaag, the first visitors are more sparing in their response: “Nice, but nothing special,” Icky writes, for example, while (Manfr)ed indicates that the two male actors disappoint.
The horror hit was made on a modest budget, which means that the film’s earnings ceiling appears to be sky-high, especially in the US. After two weekends Obsession has already grossed more than 58 million nationally, while the horror was made with approximately one million. The strong word-of-mouth appears to be decisive when gauging the figures.
Marked increase
“I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a film go so far into the air in its second weekend,” says a well-known box office expert. Variety. “The audience fully embraces the film.” In the second weekend that Obsession was running, American visitor figures increased by no less than 30 percent compared to the opening weekend.
