Until then, cinema had curiously hesitated to transpose the figure of General de Gaulle on the screen. With the exception of Gabriel Le Bomin’s film in 2020, soberly called De Gaulle, and illuminating the intimate side of the character during the decisive hours of June 1940, fiction was reluctant to capture the heroic trajectory of the man of June 18. Too solemn, too overwhelming, too present in memories, the stature of the “savior of France”, which made him a national monument, had discouraged any project. The risk is obviously to fall into hagiography or quite simply ridicule.
