There has never been a happy immigration in American history. There is a form of historical amnesia that suggests that European immigrants were welcomed with open arms. This is false. Since the beginning of the colonial period, each migratory wave has encountered forms of rejection, discrimination or violence. This tension is part of the very DNA of American democracy.
