As soon as the news of the double earthquake that struck Venezuela became known on Wednesday June 24, one country came forward before all the others to show its solidarity: the United States, until recently an opponent of the Chavista regime. Without delay, Washington came to the aid of Caracas. As of Monday June 29, the American army reopened the port of La Guaira to allow the disembarkation of humanitarian aid. The USS Fort Lauderdale, an amphibious troop and equipment transport ship, is stationed in the waters of this seaside city, the heart of the disaster.
