Since the start of the World Cup, the Blues have put in a string of performances, match after match. At their head, Kylian Mbappé attracts all eyes. In four matches, the French striker has already scored six of the France team’s 13 goals.
Tuesday June 30, against Sweden, he once again showcased his talent by scoring a double. A performance which allows him to add a record to an already impressive collection.
Top scorer in knockout stage
Thanks to his two goals against Sweden, Kylian Mbappé became the top scorer in the history of the World Cup in the knockout phase. In three appearances at the World Cup, he now has ten goals in decisive matches.
He thus erases his own record, which he shared until then with two Brazilian players: Leônidas, having scored eight goals during the 1938 edition, and Ronaldo, with as many achievements accumulated during the 1998, 2002 and 2006 World Cups.
Top scorer in the history of the Blues
As soon as he entered the 2026 World Cup, on June 16 against Senegal, Kylian Mbappé became the top scorer in the history of the France team. Author of a double, he then brought his total to 58 goals, surpassing Olivier Giroud’s 57 goals.
Since this first match, the captain of the Blues has added four additional goals to his tally, bringing his total to 62 goals in the national jersey.
Second top scorer in World Cup history
Against Sweden on Tuesday, Kylian Mbappé scored his 18th goal in the World Cup since his first participation with the Blues in 2018. The striker thus becomes the second top scorer in the history of the tournament. He now surpasses Miroslav Klose’s 16 goals and is now only ahead of Lionel Messi, author of 19 goals with Argentina.
Whatever the competition, Kylian Mbappé seems unstoppable in front of the cages. From 2019 to 2024, while playing for Paris Saint-Germain, the striker finished top scorer in Ligue 1 without interruption, with a total of 162 goals scored.
A quadruple in the French team
Since the start of this World Cup, Kylian Mbappé has scored doubles, without beating his personal record of four goals scored in a single match. A performance achieved in 2021, during the qualifiers for the Europe zone of the World Cup, where the Blues won 8-0 against Kazakhstan.
The star of the Blues thus joined the very short list of French internationals who scored a quadruple, alongside Jean Sécember in 1932, Jean Nicolas in 1934 and Just Fontaine in 1958. If he achieved this feat again during the 2026 World Cup, he would become the first player in the history of the Blues to score two quadruples for the national team.
Youngest player to play in two World Cup finals
During the 2022 World Cup final against Argentina, Kylian Mbappé was 23 years, 11 months and 29 days old, becoming the youngest player in history to play in two finals of this tournament. The previous holder of this record was the Brazilian Denilson, who played his second final in 2002 at the age of 24.
In 2026, the French striker reached a new symbolic milestone. On June 22, against Iraq, he became, at 27, the youngest player to reach the milestone of 100 caps for the national team, erasing the previous record held by Patrick Vieira who had to wait until he was 30 to reach this symbolic milestone.
