An unusual calm reigns on the street leading to the Petite Barrière, one of three border posts between the cities of Gisenyi, Rwanda, and Goma, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). That morning, the sidewalks of this commercial axis, one of the busiest in Central Africa, were almost deserted. A few traders watch time pass, sitting on stacked pallets. On May 17, the Rwandan government announced the “temporary closure” of its borders with the DRC, in reaction to the announcement, the same day, of a positive case of Ebola in Goma.
