Of course, text messages are not necessarily the right criterion for judging the level of spelling. “It’s a separate writing style, invented for practical reasons,” recalls linguist Alain Bentolila. The fact remains that the spelling level of young people has undoubtedly declined. A study carried out in 2021 by the statistical service of the Ministry of National Education showed that CM2 students had worse spelling results than those assessed in 1987, 2007 and 2015.
