Despite the doubts about his constitutionality, Gabriel Attal’s shock proposal seems to seduce the French. 71 % of them are favorable to the ban on wearing the veil in public space for girls under the age of 15, according to an Ifop-Fiducial Survey for Sud Radio published on Tuesday.
According to political proximity, supporters of the Republicans are the most favorable (79 %), followed by those of Renaissance (75 %) and RN (74 %).
This measure is also supported by a part of the left: it collects 74 % of favorable opinions among PS sympathizers, 59 % among environmentalists, but only 35 % among rebellious. Only LFI sympathizers are therefore mainly opposed to it.
Former Prime Minister Gabriel Attal had proposed on May 20 the ban on wearing the veil in public space for minors under the age of 15 because “this affects gender equality and child protection”.
This proposal was strongly criticized by the left, but also part of the central block and the right which deem it inapplicable or unconstitutional.
The survey was carried out from May 27 to 28 with a sample of 1,000 French representatives of the population aged 18 and over. The margin of error is between 1.4 and 3.1 points.
