Bong Joon Ho, the Oscarwinning director of the impressive thriller Parasite (2019)is back with an ambitious science fiction film. His latest project, Mickey 17 (2025)was initially received with mixed reactions, but has now convinced the public. The film that is currently still running in a limited number of cinemas can be streamed from next week via HBO Max.

Mickey 17 is based on the book Mickey7written by Edward Ashton. The film revolves around a so -called Expandable, a human clone that is focused on dangerous space emissions. Every time Mickey something comes across, is seriously injured or dies, he is replaced by a new version of himself, with the same memories. While he does his best to keep living, he also struggles with his own identity.
Three Oscar nominated actors
Not only the character Mickey started to struggle with his identity, but also actor Robert Pattinson was made doubts. Director Joon Ho insisted that certain scenes were recorded without Pattinson knew which version he was playing. In addition to Pattinson, there are also roles for Michael Monroe, Steven Yeun, Patsy Ferran, Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collette. The film created high expectations because it is Joon Ho’s first film after the stunner Parasite.
