Arrested in 1794 by revolutionaries under the regime of terror, the 16 carmelite sisters of Compiègne are an emblem of the Picardy city. Guillotine for “fanaticism and sedition”, they say that they have peacefully accepted their fate, in the name of peace. Raised to the rank of martyr, they have since been celebrated for their sacrifice. The enthusiasm around them goes far beyond Oise and France, since many carmelite orders exist around the world, as in Ho Chi Minh City, in Vietnam.
