JK Rowling is not taking over to oppose the casting of Paapa Essiedu, which was definitively appointed at the beginning of March for the lead role of Severus Sneep. On social media, the writer cites an article in which the suggestion is that she would rather not see Essiedu in the series, and perhaps even would like to dismiss him. According to Rowling, this is absolutely no question of this.
Opposing opinions
Last weekend we reported on a statement by HBO content boss Casey Bloys, who assured fans of Harry Potter that the new series will not have an anti-transtrance rhetoric. Worries about the ideological approach of the makers have recently been fueled by firm expressions of Rowling, who supported the British Supreme Court behind a conservative law. The Last of US actor Pedro Pascal then called on fans to boycott the series, since Rowling is connected to it as a producer.
Various actors recently signed a petition that called on the entertainment industry to protect trans actors. Among the stars that supported the call were Eddie Redmayne (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) and Paapa Essiedu, who will play the role of Severus Sneep in the series. However, the fact that Rowling has a radically different vision than the Black Mirror actor does not mean that she does not want to work with Essiedu:
I don’t have the power to fire an actor at all, and if I could do that, I would leave it (…) I don’t believe in removing anyone’s job because that person has a different opinion
In addition to drawing the petition, Essiedu itself has not yet taken publicly about Rowling role as a producer.
