The terrible events in Enschede of 13 May 2000 are the inspiration for a brand new home -grown series. The episodes of The fireworks disaster (2025) present the enormous impact and aftermath of this disaster. The mini series starts today on TV and can also be streamed in its entirety.
Enormous explosion
What started 25 years ago as a sunny day ended in a destroying disaster. A huge explosion wiped a complete city district from the map. The fireworks disaster tells how people’s daily life was totally destroyed in one fell swoop. From a young student who struggles with guilt, to the local police officer who is confronted with a trauma that he has hidden deeply.
The series of fireworks storage director Ryanne Visser also follows. She tries to rebuild her life in the midst of reproaches and distrust. Detective Maurice Hoekstra is looking for answers and the mayor tries to keep a grip on a situation that threatens to flood him.
Joes Brauers
The role of local police officer is played by Hardcore Never Dies-actor Joes Brauers, Katrien van Beurden can be seen as the fireworks storage director and Thomas Acda plays the role of detective. Peter Blok and Miky Dijkstra can also be seen in the episodes that are directed by disaster flight director Lourens Blok. EO final editor Arnoud Bruinier indicates that the new series “makes it clear how drastic this national disaster has been”.
In The fireworks disaster Let the explosions, but the focus is mainly on the aftermath of the disaster. So many lives have changed radically on 13 May 2000. The characters in The fireworks disaster all struggle with the direct and indirect consequences of the disaster. For them, questions about guilt and responsibility are of vital importance, because how can you continue after such a big loss without a clear story? With this series we hope not only to commemorate, but also to offer room for recognition and processing of sudden loss.
