On April 24, the long -awaited final season appeared on Netflix You (2018–2025)the psychological thriller series about the conquests of the treacherous charmente Joe Goldberg. Enthusiasts now know how Joe’s story ends, but the makers now admit that they have also thought about other endings at an earlier stage. Which alternative scenario appeals to the imagination the most?
Note: This article contains large spoilers about the end of ‘you’ season 5!
Behind bars
In an interview with the New York Post doing You-Makers Michael Foley and Justin Lo explore how they considered at an earlier stage to give Joe (Penn Badgley) a different end. Now we see the main character in the last episode behind bars, where the majority of his remaining victims survived the glass cage. From the final voice-over we understand that the serial killer has still not been able to look completely in the mirror, and still sees himself as the victim of an unjust society.

Death as a way out
The makers agreed at the decisive stage that it would have been “too easy” to make Joe die:
We wanted to put him in a cage ourselves, a place where he can’t feel the touch of a mistress
Joe had to look forward to the consequences of his actions, so much was clear, and that was not possible if there was a form of redemption for the seriesster. An important element in the final is that Bronte joe shoots into the genitalies. A deserved fate, Penn Badgley stated earlier in a separate interview:
The question really becomes: what do you do with someone like Joe? Only imprisonment does not feel enough. So then add this element to it

Former versions
The fact that Joe’s death never enjoyed the serious preference of the makers does not mean that there has been no alternative ending in the writer’s room:
I remember a version in which he [wel degelijk] was shot. And the audience did not notice that until the last episode, in which he realizes that he is a spirit
According to the makers, there has also been a version in which Joe dies in the hands of Bronte. Both endings were therefore put aside at a relatively early stage.
The full final season of You can now be viewed on Netflix.
