PEMEX: Entrepreneurs ask for dialogue per ceiling of the gasoline price

Entrepreneurs have requested dialogue tables with the federal government to evaluate the viability of putting a maximum price of 24 pesos per liter of gasoline, measured yesterday by President Claudia Sheinbaum.

This was indicated by Francisco Cervantes, president of the Business Coordinating Council, who confirmed that they have requested a meeting with the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit to discuss the initiative.

“We are going to talk with the Treasury and we already ask to have a work table to talk about the maximum cap on gasoline,” said Cervantes in statements to journalists.

Private sector representatives also indicated that price control could generate negative economic consequences, such as inflationary pressures and alterations in the energy market.

For his part, José de Jesús Rodríguez Cárdenas, president of the Chamber of Commerce of Mexico City, warned that establishing a limit to the price of gasoline without considering the economic and geopolitical context could be counterproductive.

“Price control always generates other types of actions. What is needed is congruence between the increases to be given and the economic reality of the country, ”he also said to the press.

Rodríguez explained that strict control over the price of fuel could generate distortions in the marketaffect the profitability of the energy sector and cause an inflationary effect on goods and services, underlining that the transport of products depends largely on the cost of gasoline.

Given the concern of the private sector, Rodríguez mentioned that It works on a proposal to find affinities with the Government, similar to the initiative of the package against inflation and lack, through which entrepreneurs and authorities reached an agreement to contain the price of products of the basic basket without applying price controls.

“We agree that reasonable prices are maintained that allow commercial stability. If the price is going to increase, which is not abruptly. An increase greater than 24 pesos would be harmful, but strict control could also generate unnecessary risks, ”he added.

The business sector hopes that in the next few days the work tables with the government will be formalized to define a strategy that balances economic stability and certainty in the fuel market.

Agreeing 24 pesos The liter of fuel will bring negative effects

The federal government agreement to agree on gas prices at 24 pesos is a consequence of a bad diagnosis and can have harmful consequences for Pemexentrepreneurs, public finances, consumers and the security of the country, according to the specialized agency Petrointelligence.

The company directed which are generating the transition of CRE and Cofece. ”

As for the specific measure of 22 and 24 pesos, the consultant glimpses different challenges and negative effects. First, most Pemex terminals have a price above 22 pesos per liter, which, in practice, will generate a subsidy by the oil company so that all terminals can offer fuel to That price.

“We have estimated this subsidy between 8 and 10% of the collection of 2024 of IEPS for gasoline and diesel,” he said.

For Petrointelligence, secondly, the speed of the results of this measure is not the maximum that can be obtained, since the price to the public is determined in 50% by the value of the fuel per se, which is based on the international market ; in 40% for taxes, and in 10% for the value chain, which consists of the commercialization, distribution, transport and sale activities (the stations).

“That is, the fastest way For the Government it would be the fiscal component of 40% and not that market of 10%, since it has no control of the international price and yes of the prosecutorand it is more complicated to guarantee the effect on the price through a large number of companies that, through a single action by the government, ”he said.

Third, A gap for the indicated value chain of only two pesos per liter is not enough for all the participating companies, since only for the Expenditureservice stations, is estimated in more than three pesos per liter, of which 50 cents are necessary for compliance regulatory by stations.
